Journal of Experiments:

Castner Cell

Currently the journal is lacking any entries that might be considered current.  The question often comes up, where are the updates?  The long and short of it is that in 2006 I graduated from college and moved.  The apartments that I lived in where not the place for chemistry no matter the precautions.  A chemist is not only responsible for themselves but everyone around them so in good conscious I could not do any experiments.  Now that I live in a house and I have plenty to loose I have since stopped all experiments that involve chemicals.  So, I guess the long and the short of it is that I no longer do chemistry at home save reading.

These pages were created because I would often wonder if an experiment that I was contemplating had already been done by someone else, was there someone that I could ask about what to expect, was it dangerous?  Even simple experiments would be nice to have a short description of what to expect.  This was not created as a comprehensive database.  Just a catalogue of things I had tried, an occasional picture, and descriptions of the outcome.  In short, a journal of my attempts at chemistry.  If you have any questions about any of these experiments contact me at Thanks a lot for looking and have a great day.

Potassium Hydroxide x Magnesium Thermite Rxn

Experiments from 2003

(Actually only 1 experiment here, preparation of potassium metal from potassium hydroxide and magnesium turnings.)

Test Tubes

Experiments from 2004

Highlights include two attempts at anhydrous hydrazine from urea and nickel powder, and my large scale bromine manufacture, and don't forget my massive Castner cell this year.

Ammonia copper solution

Experiments from 2005

Magnesium boride and my nickel/aluminum catalyst were pretty neat, more work with ethylene carbonate and more attempts (as usual) at the alkali metals.

Benzoic Acid

Experiments from 2006

Just one to report on, decarboxylation of benzoic acid with DMSO.
